Due to the abnormally nice weather we’ve been seeing this January, the fishing on the Truckee has been quite good as of late. There have been hatches of baetis on most sections of the river, especially east of Sparks. The nymph fishing also remains good when the dries aren’t present. Fishing dries is a rare opportunity on the Truckee, and this is one of the best times of year to find consistent action on top. With the lower river fishing so well, this is a great time to book a float with us and fish out east. Dries, nymphs and streamers are all in play right now, the weather has been beautiful, and the angling pressure is very light!

Truckee River Fishing Report
Fishing here on the California side has been picking up this week. The nymph fishing using worms, baetis and midges has been great, and there has been some opportunity for throwing dries at the Glenshire Bridge area using baetis and midges mid-day. When fishing up high in the system, such as in the town of Truckee, focus on fishing the warmest points of the day. This is when water temps rise and the fish become more active. As we see very clear conditions around this section of river, when nymphing, use small dark nymphs such as juju baetis, micro mays, or black zebra midges. It is still a wise idea to pair these guys with a large attractor such as a worm, stone or egg.
As the river enters Nevada, we will see water temps rise, turbidity increase and fishing improve overall. Down here we will see the baetis hatch throughout the day, with frequency increasing into the afternoon. This is the time of year when these guys can be pretty large, up to a size 14. This week, we were seeing them more in the 16-18 range. Streamer fishing has been a bit more day to day but is a really fun way to fish the big, featureless stretches abundant in the lower river.

Little Truckee Fishing Report
Recent reports of the road out to the LT indicate that it is open to high clearance vehicles with snow tires and that the fishing has been good for those brave few heading out here. Good hatches of baetis mid-day make for some fun mid-winter dry fly fishing, and euro nymphing throughout the day remains the most consistent. Use worms, eggs, baetis and midges, with the latter two down to a size 24.

Pyramid Lake Fishing Report

The fishing at Pyramid remains slow this week and with sunny, windless days in the forecast, we can’t imagine things improving in the near future. This has been quite a different year than last year, which we can only blame on the lack of weather so far this winter. We are still hopeful there will be a window of some great fishing out here this year, with the highest odds falling on those storm days during what’s left of the winter.
No matter what the winter chooses to do, we will at least have spring, when the fish spend more time in shallow water regardless of the weather. If heading out here, focus on stripping or fishing dark leeches during first and last light, and switching to either olive or white leeches mid-day, mixing in some midges down to a 14 if the lake really glasses over and if the bite gets tough.
