January 30th Fly Fishing Report for the Truckee River, Little Truckee River and Pyramid Lake

DSC08468
Yet another dry week here in the Tahoe region and it’s beginning to get a bit concerning that we will just not see the snowpack that we need this year. While we do still have a few good months of winter ahead of us and we’ve seen our share of “Miracle Marches”, there is a good chance that we may be dealing with some low, warm water on the river by mid-summer. Luckily, we do have a number of reservoirs that are sitting above average for this time of year, and these compounds are staying true to their names, providing a reserve for later in the year.

As of this week though, the river has been fishing very well. The rainbows are beginning to get their pre-spawn aggressiveness and vibrant colors, we are seeing some fun dry fly fishing on Glenshire and the lower river. We are also a short way out from the skwalas yearly emergence, which is normally great dry fly fishing on low water years. There’s still lots to look forward to!

Truckee River Fishing Report

The Truckee has been fishing very well this week. This is such a great time to live in the area and have the opportunity to go fish the river on a whim, with few others around and plenty of fired up fish! With the fish holding in slow water right now, indicator fishing is the name of the game, focus on walking speed water or less. Worms, eggs, stones, baetis and midges are the flies of choice again this week, with the biggest emphasis on eggs and baetis.

We are finding a few fish on skwala nymphs on the CA side this week, and this will only get better in the coming weeks. We have yet to see any adults on top, but expect to see them soon. The skwala hatch can last for quite a while, so be sure to have a good selection of both the nymphs and adults if you plan on fishing the Truckee much this spring.

On the NV side, the name of the game is baetis. The dry fly fishing out here really picked up over the last two weeks, and this can be some of the best fishing on top that the Truckee provides. This method will get better and better as you head east, anywhere from Lockwood and down normally. While streamer fishing remains a bit hit-or-miss, it’s a fun way to cover water and hunt for that trophy. White and black are some good colors this time of year, but it’s also hard to go wrong with olive.

Fish mid-day through the evening this time of year, when water temps are on the rise. As a reminder, we do offer float trips on the lower river, which is currently fishing great and will likely just get better over the next few weeks. Give us a call to get out there with us!

Little Truckee Fishing Report

Flows remain low on the LT at 47 CFS. Access out here remains tough as we still see most nights dipping down into the 20s and day temps in the mid 40s. This has kept the ice on a good amount of Stampede Dam Road. We only recommend high clearance 4wd vehicles with snow tires to attempt to get out here. With how good the main river is fishing, we would encourage you to fish there instead.

Pyramid Lake Fishing Report

We are still seeing the bite remain a bit day-to-day out here, due in large to the lack of weather this year. There’s still a good opportunity most days to find fishing during the morning bite window, but typically this will die off mid-day, and the evening bite has been spotty. Focus on getting on the water during that hour before sunup and fish hard those first few hours. We have seen the midge fishing getting better and better, especially during these extended high-pressure periods.
When fishing out here last week, our brown TCO Two Tone Midge in a size 10 X-Heavy put in work, getting 5 to the net during an otherwise tough day. We still have some great months of Pyramid Lake fishing ahead of us, and even if we don’t see the weather stick around like we did last year, the spring pre-spawn bite will still provide a solid window of fishing. Until then, keep an eye on that forecast and look for any days with wind, overcast or precipitation and send it!

Also, If you are reading this on Friday, the 30th, We are having our Pyramid Lake shop talk here in the shop tonight at 6:30pm and we’d love it if you joined us. It is a free hour long presentation, followed up by a Q&A. Then next Saturday, February 7th, we will be having a Pyramid Lake Fly Tying Night with special guest Doug Ouellette. Doug O. will be tying “The Original Popcorn Beetle” and talking about the nuances of tying and fishing this Pyramid Lake necessity. I (Miles) will also be there tying up our TCO Two Tone Midge, which has been proving itself yet again this season. This is another free event, also starting at 6:30pm. You don’t want to miss this one!
