Fall Guided Trips

The Truckee has been fishing quite well this week along most stretches of river due to good water temps just about everywhere right now, except from Lockwood downstream, where the persistent warm water coming out of Steamboat Creek has been keeping that section a bit too warm still. We would also recommend fishing anywhere from Hirschdale downstream, where the flows would be at their best. Glenshire is holding at just around 100 CFS, while the flows in the canyon continue to hold strong at 500. The Glenshire area is fishable but would be less than ideal. Dry dropper fishing may be a good option through here though, especially with the presence of October Caddis in the system. We have begun to see good hatches of these bugs this week, and they are most active in that last hour of light. These are the last big bugs of the year before baetis and midges take over as the dominant hatches, and the larger fish know it, so this is a great opportunity to cover water with one of these big dries, in a size 6-8, and for good measure, maybe stick a nymph below it. It’s also worth noting that the majority of these bugs are found on the California side of the river, with very few found by the time you hit Reno. We are well stocked on dries to represent these bugs, so stop in or check them out online. We will list our favorites in this week’s suggested fly list below. The streamer bite has been a bit day to day with the nicer weather present, and we would typically focus on these during the low light hours. Both dead drifting the on the euro and stripping them has been working, but this will a game of putting in the time either way you go. The smaller flies right now would be the ever-present baetis and midges, and these will be absolute mainstays from now through next spring, so be sure to have plenty of these in your box.
