The surrounding mountains are now snow capped, the fall colors have peaked and things are steadily heading towards winter here in Truckee. This year brought excellent fall colors to the area, and the fishing conditions were equally great thanks to multiple good winters and a quick shift in cooler weather starting in early September. With another rain and snow mix on it’s way this weekend, we anticipate great fishing on the Truckee this week and are hopeful to see the shore fishing at Pyramid start up before too long.

Guided Fly Fishing

Truckee River Fishing Report

The Truckee has seen very stable conditions this week. The flows are holding at 120 CFS around Glenshire Bridge, 450 below Boca, 320 in Mogul and right around 400 at Sparks. The overall theme is these are above average flows for this time of year, mostly thanks to large releases out of Boca.

While the upper section of the river here in town may be a bit skinny, it’s still fishing well overall, with some great dry fly opportunities using baetis and midges. The canyon section will provide a great option for those looking to fish larger water with indicator set ups or streamers. The Reno area can have awesome tight line nymphing water, as well as some good hatches of baetis happening from Lockwood down, on the lower river. This is one of those rare times where pretty much the entire river will fish well, and you can have nearly 100 miles of good water to choose from.

The two main bugs you will see along the entire system will be midges and baetis, and these are pretty much failsafe regardless of where you end up. We are also fishing a lot of egg patterns as the browns spawn. Stones, worms, caddis and the occasional crawdad make up the other options for this time of year.

With dropping temps, fish have definitely moved into some slower water now, and we are putting a good focus on walking speed water, still finding some nice fish in some faster stuff as well. Fish it all right now.

Little Truckee Fishing Report

The Little Truckee is still low, and the browns are currently spawning. We highly encourage anglers to avoid fishing this river right now. With the amount of water getting released out of Boca, we anticipate that it will only be a matter of time before the flows come back up out here.

Pyramid Lake Fishing Report

The fishing out here has slowed a bit again this week as the bait balls began to disperse and trout became a bit more spread out. We hope to see the shore bite start up as early as next week, especially as this next storm system pushes through. When they move near the banks, using balanced baitfish and balanced leeches under an indicator will be a great way to find them. During those early morning hours or on storm days, stripping larger streamer patterns imitating Tui Chub will be another effective method and can be very addicting once you feel that first pull.

In anticipation for the midge bite, which usually starts up around January, we have just got our first batch of custom TCO Pyramid flies in the shop, TCO’s 2-Tone Midge. These midge patterns are ones that we fished out here most of last year with very consistent success and we are proud to offer them to all of you. We will also be posting a fly tying video of it in the coming weeks for those of you that like to “fly what you tie”. We will continue to expand our fly offering and gear selection for this world class fishery in the coming months, so stay tuned!
