Truckee River Fishing Report

These cold mornings have made the bite window on the Truckee a bit more limited as of lately. Getting on the water around 10-11am and fishing through the warmest point of the day will be the name of the game until things warm up again in spring.

With the lack of precipitation, we are doing best fishing little black stuff right now and not so much the attractor nymphs like worms, eggs and stones. While we would expect to mostly find fish only in the slow water right now as water temps dip into the low 40’s, we are surprised to still find some fish in some faster stuff. Continue to fish it all until you find a pattern!

We have been fishing baetis in sizes 16-20 and midges in sizes 18-22 in darker shades with the best success recently, both under the indicator and tight lining. This is a fun time of year as the rainbows get their winter colors going and the browns head out of spawn and begin to try and gain some calories before a long winter.

Little Truckee Fishing Report

The Little Truckee continues to see low flows right now. Please consider giving this heavily pressured fishery a rest during this time.

This November has been quite different than the last, due in large to the lack of storms pushing through the area. Right now, the fishing out here is much more day-to-day, with the stormy days certainly being the best, but on the occasional sunny day still seeing fair fishing, if you’re in the right place at the right time. Of course for this lake, right place, right time is always a large part of the game.

We had our first solid day of stripping the other week, when we were fortunate enough to have overcast all day, but most days it’s been about the bobber. Balanced leeches and baitfish are best fished when there’s any chop to swim the flies around a bit, and midges will fish best during those glassy days. If you’re just not sure, try one of each. The mornings will typically be the most consistent fishing, but when fishing the lake the other day, we had a really slow day up until 2:30pm when the sun started to dip over the hill and the midges started coming off. There was a solid hour of amazing midge fishing before slowing down for the evening once again. You just never know out here, keep your head in the game and always be ready.
