With a week of rain in the forecast, we aren’t exactly seeing the type of precipitation we were hoping for, but at this point we’ll take what we can get. Let’s keep our fingers crossed for the winter to kick into gear before too long. The weather this week should help the fishing at Pyramid and possibly even the river as well. We wish everyone a great holiday season and hope to see you in the shop!

Truckee River Fishing Report
The fishing on the Truckee over the last week has been pretty slow. We speculate that this is because of the cold days we’ve been having lately. The water is also very clear, and this doesn’t typically help the angler much either as it makes the fish even more wary and more likely to key in on the small bugs.
With this said, focus on fishing mid-day right now, use light tippet and fish small flies down to a size 22. Blue wing olives and midges are really going to be the main food item this time of year. While this won’t really change until spring, if there were a bit more precipitation causing a decrease in visibility, we may find better luck on bigger meals such as worms, stones and eggs as well, but right now that is not the case.
The streamer bite has been hit or miss too, but we’re still finding a fish here and there willing to take the larger meal. We hope that the weather coming through the area this week will mix things up a bit and get the fish back on the chew a bit more.

Little Truckee Fishing Report
The Little Truckee remains low as they hold back water out of Stampede, likely due in part to the lack of storms so far this winter. With these low flows, we are recommending anglers to avoid fishing out here.

Pyramid Lake Fishing Report

The lake has yet to really switch on as we’ve seen a few good days here and there, but nothing consistent. With the funky start to the winter, the standard beaches and methods to fish them for this time of year have kind of gone out the window. If you’re heading out here, it may be a good time to explore some of the lesser-known beaches, or maybe just try a beach that you may not think of fishing in December. Who knows, it may be the ticket to a great day.
We are hopeful that this weeklong storm may mix things up for the better, so if there was a time to go, this looks like a good week to try. On some days we are hearing great reports on the strip bite, and on others, midges have been the ticket, but still, most days you have a good chance at some action using leeches under an indo. Trial and error will be the best policy on a slow start to the season at a fishery that would be considered by most to be normally hard to pin down.
