February 13th Fly Fishing Report for the Truckee River, Little Truckee River and Pyramid Lake

IMG_0814
The weather has shifted and the storm window is open. Over the last week we have seen a drop in temps, a bit of drizzle, a bit of snow and consistent cloud cover. Starting this weekend, Truckee is getting snow, and it’s looking like a good amount of it. It’s a sight for sore eyes after over a month of warm, dry days. It’s undeniable that we need the snow, but it was also hard to complain when we were getting temps in the 50’s and 60’s and awesome fishing on the river. With this change, we will see fishing on the river slow and things out at Pyramid really kick into gear.

In fact, the lake has already started to fish well this week. The weather that both the fish and the fisherman have waited for is finally here, bringing in fish close to shore and lining the very same shoreline with eager anglers. With the weather and a holiday weekend, it will be busy at the salty pond this week, so plan accordingly.

Winter Guided Fly Fishing

Winter on the Truckee is a truly special time, and our guided trips are your ticket to the best of it! Leave the crowds at home. Winter solitude brings cold, clear rivers, and the biggest fish are ready to strike. Whether you want to hunt for a trophy or looking to dial in technique, our guides know exactly where the action is. Truckee River Fishing Report

With little precipitation as of today, we have not seen a significant change in flows on the river just yet. The water temps also haven’t changed either, surprisingly. Despite these facts, the river has slowed down over the week compared to the last month of fishing during the false spring. This will change even more drastically this week as we begin to see multiple days of snow and it’s hard to believe the fishing will get better this week. Likely, it’ll be the opposite, but it’s ok, we needed this weather, and those that do still decide to fish the river instead of going skiing, heading to Pyramid Lake, or God forbid, staying inside, will be treated to an uncrowded river and fair odds at a nice fish or two.

The fish are continuing to hold in slow deep pools, so fish indicators, and take your time on each run, adjusting depth, weight and fly selection until you find a few. The main bugs are the same as the last few months, worms, eggs, stoneflies, midges and baetis.

Eggs and stoneflies have been fishing better as we head into spring, but with the snow this week, we will likely see worms become the ticket. Pairing these guys with the small bug will be sure to appease both aggressive fish looking for a big meal and those trout with a more discerning palette. With the warmer weather, we were seeing a more extended window of good fishing, but as things shift this week, focus on fishing mid-day through the early afternoon for your best odds.

Little Truckee Fishing Report

We saw an increase in flows on the LT this week, going from +/- 47 CFS to 119. While access remains open as of today, this will change as soon as this weekend with heavy snowfall. We don’t recommend attempting to get back here during this week’s storm and instead focusing on the main Truckee, if you are looking to fish moving water. Don’t forget about the dozen or more river systems within an hour reach of Truckee that are likely fishing good as well!

Pyramid Lake Fishing Report

It’s true, the lake is fishing well this week. Finally! The dropping pressure, overcast skies, wind and precipitation have done a lot to make the fish more active. Not just in the morning either, the bite has been pretty good all day!

As we head into mid-February we have seen the midge be the most consistent bug for under the indicator, but we found a few on leeches as well, especially when the waves kicked up. We have been finding the best luck on the larger profiles for both the midges and leeches, fishing dark colored leeches around 2 inches or so. In this size, the Pyramid beach leech or Rowley’s balanced leeches will do you well. For midges we have been mostly fishing the larger size 10’s and you better believe that our two tone midge in all colors has been putting them in the net consistently! Other good midge patterns would be Cat’s burnt end or the new Wright’s BBL midge in black/red or burgundy/red.

As fish remain all over the water column, we recommend playing around with the depth of your flies. When fishing a beach around 15 feet or so, we ended up doing best suspending our midges at 8-10 feet. That’s not always the case, but it worked for us this week at this beach. With the overcast days, the bite window has been good all day, with slightly better fishing around 9:00am when the midges emerge. We have also seen the strip bite get really good this week too, with a lot of fish caught on beetles in the afternoon, around 3:30pm, until dark, so don’t be afraid to put in some time on the single hander this week, the tug really is the drug with this type of fishing… It’s addicting!

We have noticed a good number of fish begin to cruise into the shallows this week, and it appears they are beginning their yearly pre-spawn behavior a bit early due to the nice weather. We will see how this storm changes this, but this is probably one reason why the strip bite has gotten good.
