February 6th Fly Fishing Report for the Truckee River, Little Truckee River and Pyramid Lake

Well, the false spring weather was nice while it lasted, but we are certainly ready for some snow. With a promising storm in the forecast starting Sunday, we recommend getting out and making the most of these last sunny days by getting on the river. We don’t think you’ll be disappointed!

The fishing on the Truckee as of late has been very good, but it’s very likely this big storm will slow the bite down for our local rivers. It’s undeniable that we needed this weather, so it’s a welcome sight for those living in the area. It’s also great for those avid Pyramid anglers, who should see a great combination of conditions for fishing out here this week. Let it snow!

Truckee River Fishing Report

The extended stable conditions on the Truckee over the last few weeks has made for good flows, clear water and steadily rising water temps. The fishing has been really good and if you were one of the lucky few to think about fishing the river in January during this extended high-pressure system, kudos to you! This will change starting Sunday, the forecasted storm is supposed to last for a week minimum, and it appears to be high odds of snow over rain. Let’s keep our fingers crossed because the crest looks pretty bare for this time of year.

We have been fishing all over the river recently, everywhere from just outside of Tahoe City to all the way down to USA Parkway. It’s ALL been good. The hatches of baetis out east have made for some really consistent action on dries, and the section along Highway 89 has been a great challenge with the slow clear water and ultra spooky fish. Think long leaders, dry droppers, or maybe even some streamer fishing. We absolutely love this river for the variety it offers along its 120 miles of trout water. With the water temps remaining cold, focus on the slow deep runs, walking speed or less along most of the river, except maybe out east.

We have been fishing more egg patterns lately as the rainbows gear up for spawn in a few short weeks. With the precipitation starting this week, worms and stones will also make for great attractors, paring well with baetis nymphs and zebra midges down to a size 22 depending on the water clarity. It’s also worth noting that there are far more stoneflies in the upper reaches of the river than from Reno down, as they require a high water quality and rocky substrate to thrive. Fish mid-day through the evening for the best results.

Little Truckee Fishing Report

The LT remains low, at +/- 45 CFS. Access is mostly open as of today, but this will change starting Sunday. We recommend giving this fishery a break for the time being and fishing the main river, which is fishing excellent right now.

Pyramid Lake Fishing Report

While the fishing out here still remained a bit day to day this week, we’ve been hearing a lot more positive reports at the lake lately. The bite window is still mostly in the morning or mid-morning, slowing down in the afternoons most days, but we are seeing better numbers in both amount of fish as well as size.

Historically these next 3 months are some of the best at Pyramid, so it’s not all too surprising that the fishing has picked up a bit despite the lack of weather. The exciting news is this incoming storm, which should really do a lot to improve the fishing this week. Keep an eye on the forecast and time your day accordingly.

Days with overcast, wind and rain will be the best opportunities for good fishing. Recently we have been seeing most fish caught on midges, and while this month is when we usually transition into fishing more midges, it has likely been expedited because of the nice weather. With the shift in weather patterns, dark leeches should also be in the rotation, as well as stripping bugger/beetle combos. This is looking like a great week to be on the lake, hope to see you out there!
