April 4th, Fly Fishing Report for the Truckee River, Little Truckee River and Pyramid Lake

With a significant amount of snow blanketed here in Truckee, access along Glenshire Drive and out to the Little Truckee will remain limited early in the week. Access should be mostly open by the middle of the week due to temps rising quickly into the mid-60’s. As you head down the hill towards Nevada, the snow tapers off around Floriston, and this lower section of the canyon is fishing very well. The warm weather this week should bring some hatches of skwalas. We are expecting good dry fly eats on the Truckee for those willing stick to the top water game and cover ground. These skwalas are an exciting hatch for the Truckee because it’s the first large bug of the year and it consistently brings up some of the biggest fish on the river. As with most hatches, some years can be better than others. Looking at the current conditions, the writing on the wall is telling us this will be a good year for those big ol’ cheeseburgers until the water comes up from run off. So, get out there and get after it!

Guided Spring Fly Fishing

April is one of the best months of the year to fish the Truckee River. The days are longer and water temperatures are on the rise. With spring, we start to see our first big hatches of the year and the fish begin to come out of their winter doldrums. The Skwala stonefly emerges and the BWO's are hatching in mass. The fish are hungry, and we see of the best opportunities of the year to find good numbers of quality fish.

Book a trip this spring and see what the Truckee has to offer!

Truckee River Fishing Report & Forecast

The Truckee continued to fish well through this last storm and we expect it to stay that way for the near future. This last late-season storm is great to see, helping bolster our late season snowpack and will only help the cause for those imminent hot mid-summer days. Once we see some consistently warm weather, the run off should be quick to follow and the tactics will change. There will still be fishing to be had! The main bugs right now will be skwalas, baetis, midges and winter stones. We are also beginning to see some caddis larvae at lower elevations, as well as some green drake nymphs and a few yellow sallies. Spring is here and now is a good time to mix up your fly selection a bit from the typical winter bugs to see what the fish are keying in on. While we are still seeing most fish hanging in the slower water, probing the occasional medium speed run can pay off from time to time. When fishing skwala or baetis dries, your best bet will remain in those slower buckets, tail outs, or the ends of slow deep riffles. Fishing will be good all day, but we have still been doing best in the early afternoons. If you only have a morning or late evening to fish, it’s certainly still worth getting out there. We would also like to note that we have began to see redds along the Truckee River as high up as Glenshire. Please remain aware of where you are wading. Avoid stepping on, or anywhere near, these oval shaped clearings on gravel bars. Even more importantly, do not fish to these spawning fish and help keep our wild trout populations viable as this is a nearly 100% wild trout fishery. Giving these fish their space during this time of year is paramount to their success. If you ever have any questions about the best policies or practices of fishing during this time of year, don’t hesitate to reach out, we’re always happy to help explain!

Little Truckee River Fishing Report & Forecast

With the recent storm, access out here will be limited this week. Even after a few days of warm weather, odds remain high that there will still be some patches of deep snow in some of the shaded sections of road out here. We do not recommend that any 2WD or low clearance vehicles attempt to get out here this week. If you have a high clearance 4WD vehicle, this is still no guarantee right now. In addition you should be equipped with good mud/snow tires and be prepared with a shovel, tow strap, winch, etc.

For those that do make it out here, please also be aware that there will be spawning fish and the same policies listed above should be observed and practiced.

Pyramid Lake Fishing Report & Forecast

While we are seeing a lot of fish school up in shallow water and become mostly lock-jawed as they head into spawn, this week’s storm has turned the bite back on for a few short days. Conditions earlier this week were fantastic. We would bet dollars to doughnuts that the warm days expected early next week will slow this bite to a near crawl and you’d be much better off fishing the river. That said, if you are planning to head out here this week, we would recommend heading to one of those shallower sand bottom beaches. Try setting up a ladder and focusing on stripping at beaches such as the Nets, Windless Bay or up north at Warrior Point. This will typically be a good way to get into a few of those cruisers when the sun is high and the wind is low.
