July 18th, Fly Fishing Report for the Truckee River and Little Truckee River

Looking at the forecast, we are seeing air temps cool off substantially heading into next week with highs in the mid-70’s most of the week. This is exciting news as we see more pleasant conditions for us and cooling water temps on the Truckee. This coupled with the stabilized flows on both the Truckee and the Little Truckee should make for some excellent fishing conditions for the remainder of July!
Thank you to everyone who remained vigilant on the voluntary hoot owl restrictions on the main river during last week’s heat wave. We love to have people come in asking if we carry thermometers! While we are still certainly not out of the woods yet in terms of warm water, this week’s cooldown will help. Please continue to carry those thermometers, keep an eye on the weather forecast and look at the Farad gauge on the USGS California Streamflow webpage when planning your day on the water. Temperatures will be especially important if you are fishing anywhere upstream of the Boca confluence.

Truckee River Fishing Report & Forecast
The flows along the Truckee have remained nice and consistent over the last few weeks, with the Glenshire area at around 350 CFS and below the Boca confluence at 650 CFS. It’s exciting to see such excellent flows for this time of year and it really leaves the whole river open to good fishing conditions.
In general, due to the warmer water upstream, we recommend fishing down in the canyon sections of the river, so long as you don’t mind a bit of hiking and rock hopping. We did see the Farad gauge hit 68 degrees two days in a row last week, but since then we have seen this drop and with the cooler days ahead we should see this trend continue for now.
Typical for mid-summer fishing, the fish are holding in fast water. Using euro nymph tactics will be the best way to maximize your odds when fishing this tough river. Using a hopper dropper can be another great way to fish right now as the grasshoppers are buzzing around with regularity. If using this method, make sure to fish with a heavy tungsten bead head nymph, and use a 2+ foot drop below the hopper to make sure you’re getting down in front of them.
For euro nymphing, using crawdads and stoneflies remain your best bet for anchors with perdigons in sizes 14-18 on your tag. The main bugs on the Truckee right now are crawdads, golden stones, PMDs and caddis. With the long days, good flows and reasonable temperatures happening right now, this is such a great time to be on the river!

Little Truckee River Fishing Report & Forecast
We are incredibly pleased to see the flows on the LT stabilize at 150 CFS over the last couple weeks. After a few months of very high water and tough fishing, this drop in flows during the height of summer fishing has been amazing. The fishing out here has been very good, with dry fly and nymph fishing nearly equal right now. For those dry fly junkies, the mid-day hatch of PMDs will be coming off on a daily basis, providing consistent action on top.
Be prepared to get your skills tested, as these PHD educated fish aren’t duped very easily. We recommend having all life stages of the pale morning duns when fishing out here, including the nymph, the emerger, the dun and the spinner.
Being that this is a tailwater, we do still see winter bugs like baetis and midges around this time of year as well. Worms should be another bug any avid LT angler keeps at hand all times of year. Light tippet and a stealthy approach are other important practices when fishing out here.
