With one day of thunderstorms the temps on the main river were knocked down, but this was short lived and we are right back to warm water once again. For those looking to fish the Truckee this week, get out early. If you don’t have that option, or just a big fan of sleeping in, there is still some good options out there. You can seek out a tailwater, a spring fed creek or river, or head to higher altitude lakes and creeks, to name a few. There is definitely some great fishing to be had, but just be prepared to work for it one way or another, either through lack of sleep, miles of trail, a busy tailwater, or maybe just a couple hour car ride. Get out and explore!

Truckee River Fishing Report
The Farad gauge has been hitting 68 Degrees daily, and the Sparks gauge has been showing upwards of 75! At these temps, the best place to fish will be anywhere from Hirschdale to the Nevada stateline where temps on the river will be at their coldest. The name of the game will be fishing from sunup until a bit after noon. If you are still looking to fish much beyond mid-day, carry a thermometer with you and keep an eye on temps. The fish are currently sitting in fast water, like faster than you would think. When fishing this water type, a good amount of weight will be needed to get your flies in front of them quickly in what are often pretty short buckets. If indicator fishing, you don’t necessarily need to be fishing deep, but using heavy flies with split shot will be your best friend. We have been focusing mostly on golden stones, crawdads and PMDs, with a mix of some caddis and green drakes for good measure. As we head into the end of July, consider downsizing your flies a bit more, size 18 perdigons have been working a bit better than the rest lately as the hatches of PMDs become smaller and we anticipate the baetis to return back to the river some time around August. The success of smaller imitations is also likely a product of the summer’s fishing pressure setting in.

Little Truckee Fishing Report
The flows on the Little Truckee are holding very strong yet again this week, at 135 CFS. But for how long? With Stampede getting lower every week, we anticipate there will be a point soon in which the flows on the LT will bottom out. As of now, this is looking like another great week to be fishing out here, with its good flows, cold water and awesome dry fly fishing. The daily hatches of PMDs have the fish rising consistently as anglers work hard to trick these very selective fish. There is also some caddis in the evenings and a few green drakes lingering throughout the day, but convincing a fish to take these patterns on top is far less likely than those little pink mayflies. Carry PMDs in all their life stages for your best chances of finding a fish on top. The nymph fishing also remains excellent and can be good all day or when hatches aren’t present. Euro nymphing, indicator fishing and dry dropper fishing can all be effective ways to present subsurface, but all will still require a good level of fineness.
