July 3rd Fly Fishing Report for the Truckee River, Little Truckee River

June_12th_2026_Fly_Fishing_Report_3

Last week’s weather was such a welcome change and brought with it a significant drop in water temps along the entire Truckee River. While things warm back up again heading into next week, we expect mornings to provide the best window of fishing once again. Our local waters will certainly be busy this week with the 4th of July this Saturday, so this is a really great time to go out and look for some lesser known waters in search of solitude. There are so many awesome creeks and hike-in lakes that provide some excellent fishing this time of year, so we encourage you to get out and explore on America’s 250th anniversary. Happy 4th, everyone!

Summer Half-Day Guided Trips

July brings peak summer fly fishing conditions to our local rivers, making it the perfect time to experience a guided half-day walk and wade trip with Trout Creek Outfitters. Whether you are beating the midday heat during the crisp morning hours or mastering the art of technical pocket water presentation, our expert guides are ready to put you on fish for an unforgettable summer day on the water.

Truckee River Fishing Report

Thanks to the abnormally cold weather last week, the Truckee has narrowly avoided any hoot owl restrictions as we head into July, the warm weather in this weeks forecast will likely change things quickly in this respect, so if fishing later in the week, be sure to focus on the mornings and consider bringing a thermometer with you if you want to extend you day out much past 2 or so. The hatches have been a bit less active this week with the shift in weather, and we are seeing fewer caddis and yellow sallies, but still good numbers of PMDs and a fair amount of golden stone adults. The dry dropper fishing is still a great option this time of year because of not only the golden stones, but also because we are beginning to see a good number of grasshoppers around too. With the crawdads continuing to molt, using these patterns as your anchor on a euro rod has also effective and a great way to focus on the larger fish. With a crawdad, covering water is an important factor, if a fish wants this fly, they will typically take it within the first half dozen drifts. One thing worth noting is the increased recreational use on the Truckee during the 4th of July weekend, with so many in town, you will see a lot of non-fishing traffic on the river. People swimming, tubing, etc. Because of this, we reiterate recommending to focusing on the early morning hours as well as heading down into the canyon where less recreating happens.

Little Truckee Fishing Report

The flows on the LT have been getting “staircased down” over the last couple of weeks, dropping from 300 CFS to 150 CFS today. It’s always tough to say whether it will continue, but we are hoping that they decide to keep it at 150, which is pretty ideal summer flows. When flows drop like this, it leaves a lot of stagnant water along the banks of certain sections of river, and the mosquitos can be really nasty. Be sure to bring bug spray! The day in, day out hatch here will be PMDs, hatching mid day and last a few hours. Due to their consistency, they should be dry fly anglers main focus and all life cycles of this bug should be represented in their box. Other hatches have been Green Drakes, BWOs, midges and some caddis. These are more important for the nymph fisherman, but the drakes and the BWOs in particular are also good options on top when PMDs aren’t present. Like the main river, as we head into the 4th of July weekend, expect this river to become busy with anglers and non-anglers alike. Unlike the main river this is a much smaller and shorter section of water and it will seem to be more crowded because of this. That said, we would encourage you to focus on the odd hours of the day if you were after any sort of solitude on the water. Happy 250th everyone!
