August 21st Fly Fishing Report for the Truckee River, Little Truckee River

June_12th_2026_Fly_Fishing_Report_11

After last week’s cooldown we saw the fishing pick up immediately. We are excited to see that fall is knocking at our door here in Truckee, but we are not there just yet! Until then, we are still seeing water temps remain warm, and the name of the game will be early starts until a significant shift in the weather happens. So, get after it early and call it mid-day if fishing the Truckee. Early bird gets the worm.

That said, if you're hunting trophy trout, now is the time to go big! Try swinging big streamers through 2–3 foot riffles on the Truckee, or head to the lakes with a full-sink line to strip large patterns down deep.

Truckee River Fishing Report

The temps along most of the Truckee have dropped, but we are seeing warmer weather again this week, which has caused about a degree or so increase every day. On Wednesday we saw the Farad gauge hit 68 degrees once again, so please continue to carry a thermometer with you. With the bright, sunny days again this week, the bigger flies have been a bit of a tougher sell, and the small 18’s and 20’s have been more productive. Patterns that represent midges, baetis, PMDs and caddis are good choices. A few of the heavy hitters this week have been Firestarters, Walt’s Worms, Quill Bullets, Strawberries and Cream, Zebra Midges, and Juju Baetis. For the euro nymphers out there, our anchor flies of choice has been the Arnot’s Simple Sculpin, Rocksteady Stone, T.J. Hookers, and Slum Lords. Under the indicator it’s hard to beat a Pat’s Rubberleg to represent the Nocturnal Stones. With good flows throughout the summer and a good amount of water still in Boca, all we are waiting for is the cooler weather, and we will be sitting pretty for some excellent fall fishing here on the Big T!

Little Truckee Fishing Report

The LT has been sitting at +/-45 CFS for a few weeks now, which is near minimum flows. This is typical for late summer but is unfortunate when combined with the warm temps on the Truckee driving even more traffic up here because of its consistently cold tailwater releases. The low flows and heavily pressured fish will make for some very technical fishing out here, and 7x tippet and size 22-24 flies are often the key to success during these conditions. There is still a good hatch of PMDs happening every day, providing some consistent dry action, but as we head into the fall, we are also seeing midges and baetis come back into play for topwater fishing once again.
