We are seeing a significant drop in temps for the Truckee/Tahoe region. After Friday’s thunderstorm we are looking at highs dropping into the mid-60’s and lows down into the 40’s by the middle of the week. This should do a lot to help the fishing here on the Truckee and kick off some excellent fall fishing conditions. We have the flows, we have the water in the reservoirs, the last part of the formula has been the temps. While there has already been some bigger fish in the mix again, with this shift in the weather they should even more prevalent. That trend will continue through the fall, which is highly regarded as one of the best times to find trophy trout. We are so excited for fall fishing on the Truckee this year. While a majority of the west’s poor winter will be really showing it’s teeth by this point in the year with low water, the wet spring we had in the Tahoe area has made for better conditions on the Truckee than most anywhere else, so be sure to put the Truckee on your radar this fall, it should be a good one!

Truckee River Fishing Report
After the last few weeks of tough fishing, we have seen things already improve on the Truckee this week, and that’s before the cold front really hit. Things will really get good starting Friday. During the overcast/thunderstorm days, put some time on the streamer, either a larger articulated pattern stripped, or dead drifting a sculpin or crawdad on the euro set up, this will be a good way to tie into something larger. Typically, trout are much more willing to take the larger offerings on these kind of days. The best options for nymphs right now would be #18-#20 baetis patterns, #18-#20 midges , #16 green caddis , and #4-#6 stonefly nymphs imitating the current Nocturnal Stonefly hatch. Continue to focus your efforts mostly on the faster pocket water but maybe shift over to fishing more tailouts and slackwater in the mornings or if water temps do crash from this week’s weather. For those looking to throw dries, the midges have been somewhat consistent along Glenshire drive and using a Griffith’s Gnat in the morning hours could provide a few eats, if temps do drop enough later in the week, there have also been some Pale Evening Dun hatches towards dusk. For those looking to fish in the evenings, please take a temp before you begin to make sure it’s below 68 degrees.

Little Truckee Fishing Report
The LT has been holding at right around 40 CFS this week. These flows are low and will make for some tough fishing on what is already considered a technical tailwater, in general when flows get this low, we encourage anglers to fish elsewhere and give these fish a break. While we would recommend focusing on the Truckee in the coming weeks, if you were interested in heading out here, bring 6x or 7x tippet, and plenty of baetis and midge patterns down to a size 24.
