September 26th Fly Fishing Report for the Truckee River and Pyramid Lake

IMG_1264
With the river fishing well, less than a week until the Pyramid Lake opener and so many other options across the Sierra, it can be really tough to choose where to fish right now. This is the time of year where the anglers in search of large trophy fish neglect their jobs, chores, and even significant others in search of the one. The weather this week remains phenomenal and so does the fishing - time to get outside!

Guided Fly Fishing

Fall on the Truckee is a truly special time, and our guided trips are your ticket to the best of it! As the water cools and the leaves change, the big wild trout get aggressive. Whether you want to hunt for a trophy or looking to dial in technique, our guides know exactly where the action is. Maximize your time on the water, learn the local secrets, and make this autumn the most productive yet. Don't wait—book your Truckee fly fishing adventure today!

Truckee River Fishing Report

The Truckee has fished quite well again this week. The flows continue to hold right around the same levels, and the water temps are below the 68 degree mark along the entire system. Consistency is a key factor to happy trout, and I don’t think we can get much more consistent than this.

We are seeing great action nymphing stoneflies, baetis, PMDs, caddis and midges. The streamer fishing has also been very good this week, with jigged streamers on the tighline setup being a hard one to beat right now. For those looking to knock off the rust of their spey cast for the upcoming steelhead season, the trout spey fishing in the lower river has also been good as the fish have really begun to chase flies with the drop in water temps.

The fish have been a bit more spread out now, and both indicator and euro nymphing are in play, each one providing advantages with certain water types. As temps remain good all day, the window for good fishing is really most of the day, with the bite slowing down in the late afternoon. However, with good caddis hatches happening at dusk, there is still some great after work fishing to be had right now, and the prospect of dry fly fishing on this otherwise nymph-specific fishery is definitely keeping things interesting.

This is one of the best times of year to fish this river and the current conditions don’t get a lot better than this, we hope to see you out here in the coming weeks!

We are now one week away from the Pyramid Lake opener and things appear to be lining up well for another epic season out there. As the season kicks off, anglers will find the best success getting out on a boat or a float tube and fishing deep using large streamers imitating the main baitfish, Tui Chubs. The use of fish finders will help you locate the bait balls of these fish and therefore the Cutthroat hanging below them. In case you didn’t already know, we do now carry the Garmin Striker Cast GPS - order one this weekend so we can be sure to get it to you for the opener!

It usually isn’t until the end of October before the shore bite out here begins but depending on what the weather does over the next few weeks, there’s a good chance it may begin sooner this year. If heading out here for the opener festivities next week, be sure to have an 8-9 weight rod with a fast sinking line and some large streamers imitating the chub.

The streamers should vary a bit in weight to be able to get different sink rates depending on where the trout are feeding. It is not uncommon to use flies tied on ¼ oz. jig heads and 3-6 inches long. 20 pound fluoro is also recommended when fishing this way. We are beyond excited to get out here and chase the world’s biggest cutthroat once again this year.

We also hope to see you at the “Gear Up For The Mid” event going on at Pyramid Lake Lodge on Tuesday the 30th. Check out the event calendar on our website for the details.

Please know that we are continuing to work diligently on increasing our selection of Pyramid Lake specific gear for this winter and have all of the rods, reels, lines, nets, and flies that you need for out here (except ¼ oz. jig flies.. those you’ll need to tie yourself, you crazy animals!).
We are also set to get some custom patterns here in the shop, consisting of some of our most productive midge patterns from last year. Just like your never-ending pursuit of that world record cutthroat, we are working hard in the pursuit of having the single best selection of gear to target them, so stay tuned! Looking forward to seeing you all out here!
