March 7th, Fly Fishing Report for the Truckee River, Little Truckee River and Pyramid Lake

While we don’t know just yet if this is going to be the “Miracle March” that we’d like, the shift in weather patterns is giving us a slight bit of hope. With a decent storm in this week’s forecast, at the very least it’s not 60-plus degree T shirt weather and we’ll see the snow stay on the hill just a bit longer.

This would be a great week to get out to Pyramid Lake, which continues to fish very well, and will likely do so until it gets hot and the fish move back into the deep water some time this spring.

Truckee River Fishing Report & Forecast

While we expect the flows to remain  the same after this incoming storm, we do anticipate the temps to continue to drop with nighttime temps into the teens later this week. The drop in water temperature will make afternoons the best time to get on the water. We are still waiting on the Skwalas to really start up. While nymphing them has been putting some fish in the net this week, we have no reports of dry fly action using skwala adults. Your best bet will be fishing BWO’s, winter stones and midges right now. We often pair these with worms and eggs throughout the winter months.

The start of run-off is probably only a few short weeks away, and the flows likely will only get higher as we head into spring. When the flows come up, the game becomes fishing the edges and banks using large attractor nymphs, heavy tippet and hoping you can keep them on once you hook up. Until then, fish like you have all winter focusing on the slow deep buckets that are walking speed or slower. With daylight savings this week, after work fishing sessions are now here. Get out and get after it!

Little Truckee River Fishing Report & Forecast

The flows are 100 CFS and the road is open to most vehicles. Please be aware that there are still patches of snow and ice in the shaded areas, and between these hazards there is potential for fallen rocks on the road. Precautions should be taken while driving out here. Remember, there is no cell service once you get past Boca Dam.

The fishing out here remains good, and it’s clear the rainbows are heading into spawn based on their vibrant colors right now. We are likely a few weeks out from seeing them on redds.

This week the winter stones have been everywhere, making for a nice change of pace from the consistency of the baetis and midges. Yes, the fish are crushing these dry flies on top. The storm this week may temporarily close access again for a short while. If you have any questions about the latest road conditions for the little truckee, give the shop a ring.

Pyramid Lake Fishing Report & Forecast

Yet another great week during the best month of what is considered the best year of recent memory. Do we need to say anymore? If you aren’t fishing out here right now, you should be! With a week of stormy days, the bite should be excellent throughout most of the week.

Midges are fishing the best right now by far. We have been fishing more 2 midge setups this year than ever before. We have been mixing the leeches into the rotation on those very windy days. We are still catching twice as many fish on the midge over the leech. Try fishing the leech as your top fly with a midge on the bottom. While we catch fewer fish on the leech, the leech is helping the cause by adding weight and a larger profile to your offering.

The strip bite has yet to truly start up. We expect the strip bite to get better once water temps warm and the cutthroat begin their annual migration towards the shore in an effort to mingle with other single cutthroat.
