Best Mid-Range Rod and Reel Combo
Best Mid-Range Rod: 11 foot - 6 Weight - Redington Claymore
The Redington Claymore will be faster action and light in the hand compared to the Dually. When spending a long day on the shoreline holding a heavy switch indicator set up, shaving off a few ounces can help you stay on the water all the way through the magic hour. A fast action rod will also be more efficient when casting heavy switch fly lines, driving them into the wind with greater efficiency. Overall, this rod will provide a significant step up in performance. If you find yourself taking the Claymore up north into steelhead country, you'll find the Claymore is more accurate as you go to cast your fly behind boulders or into a current seam where you know the fish will be holding.
Pros: Better casting accuracy and distance
Cons: Less responsive than higher end switch rods
Best Mid-Range Reel: Orvis Hydros IV
Similar to the Spectrum C, the Orvis Hydros has a sealed drag system to keep sand and dirt out. It's anodized finish not only looks clean, but it helps protect the reel from the highly alkaline waters of Pyramid Lake. If you also plan to use your set up for casting in the surf, we would highly recommend the Hydros or our next contender, the Galvan Grip.
Note: If you decide to go with a 7 weight Redington Claymore or other switch-rod - we would recommend using a Hydros V
Pros: Sealed Drag System, Affordable
Cons: Less durable than similar reels, heavy in the hand
