June 13th, Fly Fishing Report for the Truckee River and Little Truckee River

Summer vibes are in full effect this week. The river has dropped into excellent shape, the bugs are popping like crazy, and we are now comfortably wet wading most of the day. This is truly one of the best months to fish the entire Truckee/Tahoe region with excellent fishing on the Truckee, all its tributaries, and most of our local lakes. While it’s tempting to just fish the Truckee every day, don’t forget to get out and explore our abundant number of creeks and lakes in the Truckee area as well. These are often underappreciated locations for fishing and will be an excellent way to find some solitude during this time of year. There are a lot of hidden gems in our area, you just got to find them!
We would also like to remind everyone that we are celebrating our 5th year anniversary with a barbeque on the river on Friday, June 20th from 11:00am - 4:00pm. We will have gear demos from Orvis, Scott, Sage, Redington, and Echo where you can cast different rods on the lawn or on the water. We will also have booths from Costa sunglasses to see how their lenses really are the best for peering through the water and spotting those pesky Truckee trout. Lastly Patagonia very graciously offered to set up their mobile wader repair station, offering free wader repair for everyone attending, regardless of the brand. We will also be offering complimentary food and drinks as a token of our appreciation for 5 incredible years as Truckee’s go-to spot for everything fly fishing! If you know you are going to attend, please take a second to RSVP on our website so we can get an idea of how many people are attending. Also, as a heads up, we will be closing the shop at noon that day so we can make sure our staff can get in on the festivities.

Truckee River Fishing Report & Forecast
While it’s always hard to pinpoint it exactly, when asked what the best time to fish the Truckee is, we will often reply the month of June. With the average winter we’ve had this year combined with the two previous years of above average precipitation, this June is really shaping up to live up to our title as the best month to fish our river.
While we move past peak runoff, and most of the creeks have dropped substantially over the last couple of weeks, we are still seeing flows in the canyon hanging around 1,000 CFS due to higher-than-average releases out of Boca Reservoir. The section along Glenshire Drive has hit the sweet spot however and is at +/-300 CFS right now and continuing to trend downward.
As the air temps consistently hang in the upper 70’s and low 80’s we are seeing an explosion of bugs on the river with hatches of Yellow Sallies, PMD’s, Green Drakes, Green Sedge Caddis, Carpenter Ants, and a few Golden Stones. This is the best time of year to throw dry flies on the Truckee River; we are seeing consistent hatches of PMD’s as well as caddis in the evenings. The big bugs like carpenter ants and green drakes are those curveball offerings when you see that big fish eating consistently on top but refusing you first few fly choices.
The warm weather as of lately has also put fish into fast water most of the day, except for early mornings or possibly during a significant hatch, when they may be pushed back into tailouts. This is when dry dropper fishing will be a very effective method, and right now there is also a realistic possibility of getting a few eats on the big foamy dry! During warmer times of the day, euro nymphing will be a very effective method. Try using a heavy stonefly as an anchor, such as a TJ Hooker or a Rocksteady Stone, and something like a Peaches and Cream, Blowtorch, or Walt’s Worm as your tag fly. With the variety of larger bugs in the system, the use of bigger, buggier flies has been working better than the dainty mayfly patterns of spring. Between big hatches, long days and wet wading, it’s really hard to beat the fishing on the Truckee this time of year!

Little Truckee River Fishing Report & Forecast
The Flows on the Little Truckee remain high and tough to fish. They have kept releases out of Stampede at around 480 CFS for around 3 weeks now. While the fish have certainly settled into these flows and found some areas to get out of the brunt of the current, these pockets will be few and far between and at times tough to get to. With the high water, the dry fly fishing will be very limited except maybe a few wide runs able to still provide slow enough water for the trout to leisurely sip dries.
The best way to fish this river at these flows is using an indicator with a good amount of weight above your first bug. This allows you to be able to reach spots a bit further out that you can’t wade out to. The euro rod is still certainly in play and will still be preferred for picking apart runs close to shore but may be a bit more limiting when fishing further away. The few small advantages of fishing out here right now would be you can fish larger, flashier flies and use heavier tippet. The main bugs out here right now would be worms, stoneflies, PMD’s, midges and BWO’s. This is also a good opportunity to throw streamers on a river that is typically know for small flies and 7x tippet.
