Umpqua Chrome Chironomid
The Umpqua Chrome Chironomid is a deadly pattern for targeting large trout in lakes and reservoirs, particularly when chironomids are nearing their emergence. The fly's distinctive "chrome" body material, typically a bright silver or pearl flash, is a critical component, imitating the gaseous sheen that builds up under the pupa's skin as it prepares to hatch. This high-flash design makes the fly exceptionally visible, even in deep or slightly stained water.
The Chrome Chironomid is most effective when fished deep under a strike indicator, using a slow retrieve, or simply suspended motionless to perfectly mimic the insect's slow, vertical ascent. It is a proven confidence pattern, particularly valuable during intense stillwater midge hatches.
