March 14th, Fly Fishing Report for the Truckee River, Little Truckee River and Pyramid Lake

Finally, Truckee seems to have a solid storm window this week. Currently there is over a foot of snow on the ground here in town, and quite a bit more on the way. This will slightly impede access here on the California side of the river, however the lower Truckee around Reno should continue to offer easier access and fish well this week. As you may expect, Pyramid will also be a good bet with these multiple days of low pressure, wind and overcast. We are just a few short weeks away from spring fishing, but Mother Nature isn’t ready to give up the ghost just yet and that’s fine with us!

Guided Spring Fly Fishing

March is one of the best months of the year to fish the Truckee River. The days are getting longer, and the water temperature is on the rise. With spring, we start to see our first big hatches of the year and the fish begin to come out of their winter doldrums. The Skwala stonefly emerges and the BWO are hatching in mass. The fish are hungry, and we see one of the best opportunities of the year to find good numbers of quality fish.

Book a trip this spring and see what the Truckee has to offer!

Little Truckee River Fishing Report & Forecast

The Little Truckee will be closed out due to snow this week and will most likely be inaccessible for a couple of weeks considering more snow is on the way. This storm comes at a good time because the rainbows are nearing spawn and can receive a bit of a break before their big moment.

Pyramid Lake Fishing Report & Forecast

With the biggest storm of the year pushing through the area, this is an excellent week to get out to the lake. Midges under an indicator have still been out-fishing any other fly or presentation. They will likely continue to do so until the fish migrate back into deeper water some time in late April or early May. We haven’t found the need to go small on these midges just yet, especially this week with the stormy days present, typically a size 10-12 is hard to go wrong with. Once fish begin to consistently come into the shallows, the strip bite will be a really fun change of pace, and may out-perform the midge on some days. Until then we encourage you to have a good stock of midges in sizes 10-12 with a good variety of colors to match their mood on any given day.

Despite the sunny day and no wind on Tuesday, Kirk landed a personal best 12.5 pound Summit LCT.
